As you hail from a cool place you might have thought of heating apparatus for your residence that would provide warmth and comfort for you and your family. What else could be a better option than the fireplaces that could fulfill all your objectives?
There are of course different types of fireplaces. They could be classified on the basis of their use, make, manufacturing materials and such other characteristics. Broadly speaking however, they could be of three types; Inserts, direct Vent and Vent free.
Insert type fireplaces
If you are staying in an old house it is most probable that you already have one of the traditional wood burning fireplaces in place. Such fireplaces have long chimneys that carry out the smoke that is generated by wood burning out of the house. In addition these fireplaces also have a vent pipe that is used to carry the fumes outside.
Ordinarily inserts whether using the traditional wood logs as fuel or using gas fires contain a metal firebox. The metal box contains both decorative logs as well as the gas jets. The firebox has two layers. The inner layer is surrounded by an air cushion and thereafter there is a second metal layer that contains the air to warm the inner firebox. Once ignited the fireplace would draw fresh air, warm it and send it up through the top of the box to warm the room.
Direct Vent fireplaces
Both wood consuming fireplaces and the gas fire using fireplaces could be direct vent ones. You do not require any chimney or pipe creating space hazards. They are vented outside directly through a hole in the outside wall. Like the firebox inserts, these direct vent fireplaces come in sealed combustion models. The air for combustion is drawn from the exterior due to sealing of the vents. At the same time the fumes are vented outside.
Although using fireplaces using electric fires might save you the inconveniences of other types of fireplaces, the advantage of direct vent fireplace cannot be undermined. By far this is the most efficient fireplace option. The entire operation is independent of the household air they cause no drafts or heat loss. The efficiency rate is very high at nearly 90% in terms of AFUE and Btu efficiency ratings.
Vent free fireplaces
Such fireplaces do not vent anything outside. They could be easily installed against a wall connecting to a gas line. It may even be fitted into something like the wall recess. Drawing rooms airs and combusting them by converting them into hot air to be delivered into the room, they provide comfort and warmth for the inmates.
Efficiency rating of vent free fireplaces is quite high at 90%. Critics however question the efficiency of vent free fireplaces. They advocate for the fire suites that are most suitable for one’s home and family integration. Another issue is the exchange of fresh air with the room air used for consumption. However improved ventilation is often achieved with the vent free model only.
